How To Use SFTP To Upload And Manage Your Files On Your Server
All you need is an app that supports SFTP connection and it should be a freeware: FileZilla, Core FTP, Win SCP or Coffee Cup Free FTP. We will use FileZilla to browse around the Playground server (either VPS or Dedicated server).
Step 1 – Download the FTP software and launch it.
Step 2 – Add server details to the FTP client. In FileZilla, it will look like this: Open Site Manager section; click on the button in the left corner or via File menu; and finally, choose Site Manager. It is easier to just press Control+S button on your keyboard.
Step 3 – Give a name to your new server (for the identification).
Step 4 – Enter your server’s IP or host name (or FQDN) in the “Host” field.
Step 5 – Enter “22” in the “Port” field if you haven’t changed it so far. Otherwise, use the port you defined.
Step 6 – Select “SFTP – SSH File Transfer Protocol“. in the “Protocol”.
Step 7 – Select “Normal” in Logon Type. Use your username to login to your server if you’ve disabled root login. The other option is to simply use “root” as user and enter the password.
Step 8 – How to connect? Press the dropdown beside the Site Manager icon and select your server. FileZilla will automatically tryto connect to your server using the given details.
Step 9 – Navigate to the root directory of your server: “/var/www/domain.com/htdocs” or “/var/www/domain.com/public_html
Step 10 – How to upload your files to the server via SFTP? Navigate into your local directory in your computer and locate all your websites files. Drag and drop it to the left pane, where you browse your server directories.
How To Make Changes in Your Files On Server By Using SFTP
Step 1 – When your files are uploaded, right-click the file you want to edit.
Step 2 – Choose “View/Edit” menu.
Step 3 – That will open your text editor so you can edit the file content.
Step 4 – After you are done, press “Save” button or close the text editor. Mark the “Finish Editing and Delete Local File” and press the “Yes” button.
How To Create New Folder or Directory
Step 1 – Right-click empty area and select “Create Directory”.
Step 2 – Name it and hit the OK button.
How To Change File Permissions?
Step 1 – Right-click the file/folder you want to change its permission.
Step 2 – Click on the “File Permissions”.
Step 3 – A window will appear, allowing you to change and set what kind of permissions the file will have
Step 4 – You can set the permissions one by one or simply typing its numeric value. All the permissions will automatically adjust accordingly (e.g: 755, 777, etc).
How To Disconnect?
Close the FTP client or press Server menu and choose Disconnect. Other option I to press Control+D on your keyboard.
